THREE QUARTERS OF GEN Z PLAN NOT TO WORK WHOLE LIFE IN 9-5 JOBS

Three quarters of Generation Z do not plan to work 9-5 jobs for their whole lives, a new poll has suggested.

A survey of 2,000 adults found that 76 per cent of those born after 1996 did not want to work for someone else, and harboured ambitions to be their own boss.

By contrast, only 57 per cent of millennials – born between the early 1980s and 1996 – had either become an entrepreneur or planned to.

Just 36 per cent of Gen X and 25 per cent of baby boomers – groups born even earlier – identified that way.

Of the young people polled, 39 per cent believed they could launch and run a business from their smartphone, and 45 per cent reckoned they could make good money from social media.

Younger people were the most confident in their own ability, with 77 per cent believing they would make a success of a business venture.

But older generations also had faith in young entrepreneurs. Forty-four per cent of all ages polled agreed that Gen Z and millennials had the most entrepreneurial spirit.

Some 34 per cent of Gen X and boomers believed there were fewer opportunities to start a business when they were younger, and 44 per cent said they had felt under more pressure to follow a traditional education and career path.

Awards for start-ups

The research was revealed by Santander UK as it announced the 100 businesses it has shortlisted for its X UK Awards, which now have a chance of securing up to £25,000 in equity-free funding.

Sam Jones – the former Dragons Den star and founder of Gener8, the alternative web browser – is one of the judges. He said: “Gen Z is proving to be the most entrepreneurial generation yet…

“They’ve grown up fully immersed in the digital age, where information, tools, and global connections are just a click away. They’re uniquely positioned to outpace previous generations in turning ideas into reality.”

Mike Regnier, the chief executive of Santander UK and also a judge, added: “It’s clear that digital-savvy Gen Z have a fantastic entrepreneurial spirit.

“But the qualities you need to succeed on your own aren’t bound by age. Entrepreneurship is vital for the growth of the UK economy.

“We are proud to support those that are just starting out through the X Awards, giving entrepreneurs of all ages the opportunity to win funding and support to take their business to the next level.”

Commissioned by Santander UK, OnePoll.com spoke to 283 members of Gen Z, 555 millennials, 507 from Gen X and 605 boomers.
